What do i lay model railway track on?

So you have decided to make a start in the world of model railways now you ask “What do i lay model railway track on?”

Model railway track should be laid on at least a track mat if it comes from a starter set, ideally you need to have a base board thats fairly solid and level. If your skilled enough you can make up a basic base board with a large sheet of ply and some 2×1 to make a frame to keep it level and solid. if your not up to that, then a number of companies have some laser cut flat pack examples available off the shelf for you to buy, or they can even do a custom design if you wanted.

Once you have your base board some modellers use a thin cork underlay below the track, there are also foam rolls available (generally in oo) this is used in an attempt to deaden the sound of a rumbling train, however there is much debate as to the effectiveness of these. However it does help to provide a realistic shoulder for ballast.
